A Bright Start

and finally the taste of Summer; here in Melbourne anyway.

It is the end of the first week back into normal routine. Kids back at school, uni, work etc so there is now a sense of structure to the day.

The studio is tidyish again. It is a small space and it doesn't take much for it to feel cluttered. I have a couple of commissions to get on with, and I want to persue more of the urban portraits that I began last year.

First though, I have made a couple of adjustments to my last horse racing painting that I did towards the end of last year.

I have brought the second place getter up where he belongs, on the inside rail. I have also gone into the horizon where the houses were, I thought, a little bit too blurry and non descript. I have also toned down the pinkish, brown hues with some bluish/purple washes.

studioexhibition2014

It's that time of the year when things come to a maddening rush towards the finish line.

And so it is too, in my studio.

I have had a steady year of painting with the usual lapses owing to familial interruptions. They are unavoidable; child neglect is not looked upon favourably in this era of human existence.

I am up to date on commissions and have a couple to get on with in the new year.

In the meantime, I have hung some pieces in my studio for an exhibtion that I have named Spectators. I am also in the throes of planning a bigger exhibition for 2015.

When I began painting eight or so years ago, I was drawn to the subject of sport. My first footy painting was of a local junior game and the first horse racing painting was of The Australia Cup, that had been held at Caulfield one year. There have been many since.

There is something about the open space of a footy field or a horse racing track, the edginess of a contest and the character of the crowd that seem to have converged, to create, one dynamic and compelling subject for me. It's one that I keep returning to.

The Spectators exhibition will be up in my studio for the next couple of weeks.

Spectators are all welcome.

If I am not in give me a ring 0400444138 or keep in touch via my facebook painting page for some in progress studio shots and opening hours.

Happy Xmas and thanks for following.

Cityscape; the day 9/11/2014

The GEAS annual Paint in the Park Day took place along the Koornang Road shopping strip on Sunday. A great change from Caulfield Park with more community interaction and far less in the way of verdant foliage....... It is both good and bad, as it is a more confronting and visible process for the artist.

It is not everyday in Melbourne that one walks down a suburban shopping street to find twenty or so artists painting and drawing their time away at an easel; maybe along the cobbled paths of Montmatre, France, but not along the flat, grey pavement of Carnegie's main street...until this weekend, of course.

The weather was perfect. The previous days heat had dissipated and the wind had eased considerably. I took the new easel along and discovered it a much easier process to undo the legs whilst the box was upside down...Thanks to Wade for the tip, it saved my back.

I had originally thought I would paint down at the station. Logistically, this was a bit tricky. Instead, I set up outside the library with a good view of the childrens playground. It is a spot I am more than familiar with given my eldest is 21 and my youngest, 9 years.

A constant stream of locals stopped by the playground with their kids. Some were a tad harried. Most, though, seemed content in soaking up the relaxed pace of a Sunday, and taking in as much leisure as time could afford them.

A few people watched me paint; kids, especially, curious in who and what figures I would place in the picture. "Is that me?" they would ask with any mark that bore resemblance to a figure....in scant, sketchy and washy marks they could see themselves.

Given the point of the project was a cityscape, I had begun with setting out of the environment and trying to create an urban feel. A bit like setting the stage. This part, for me, takes the longest: trying to establish structure and depth first, then I consider the figures, who they will be, where they are positioned and why they are, where they are.

So, as if on cue, and as I had begun to feel some degree of safety with the composition and the narrative, two young girls came by. They chatted with me and watched the painting progress for while. They noticed the spare lollipops lying beside my paints. I noticed their fluoro yellow nail polish, overlaid with coloured dots, like hundreds and thousands; I noticed the turquoise dress.

A short time later one of the girls came back to me. She asked me if I could put her and her sister into the painting. They suggested they could both pose. I couldn't say no. The timing was perfect.

And so the girls were painted.

Thanks girls.

This painting and the other eighteen works will be exhibited at the Glen Eira Town Hall Gallery from December 1 - 15 2014 details TBA

Would you like to be painted?

Work in progress

Work in progress

I am looking for people...kids, adults, teens...age doesn't matter who would like to be in a painting. I am trying to practise my portraiture work and to be able to execute them quickly. They will  be integrated into local settings ....not formal poses.

Also football themed ones; so if you are heading off to the footy in all your teams gear; I can meet you at a station or home before you go to get a couple of quick snaps. Nothing long or protracted. The Footy Art show is coming up at the end of the season and I would like to do a couple of pieces for it in which the fans are centre of attention.
